This course provides an introduction and overview of strategic technology and innovation management. This involves revisiting some of the foundational concepts and debates in strategic technology management and examining key strategic decisions at the heart of technology and innovation strategy:
- Ensuring Adaptation (Why?): What opportunities and threats must the company respond to ensure its survival and remain competitive?
- Allocating Resources (Where?): Where should the firm allocate its resources?
- Timing Entry (When?): When should the firm allocate resources?
- Designing Processes (How?): How can the firm optimize its innovation processes?
- Engaging Partners (With whom?): How can the firm establish and maintain a powerful ecosystem?
- Capturing Value (So what?): How can the firm protect its core technologies and capture value?

Torsten-Oliver Salge
Professor Torsten Oliver Salge, Ph.D., is the head of the Innovation, Strategy, and Organization Group at RWTH Aachen University and Co-Director of the TIME Research Area. He holds a Ph.D. and an M.Phil. degree from the University of Cambridge. Prior to joining RWTH Aachen University in 2013, he held (visiting) appointments at universities in Auckland, Buenos Aires, Cambridge, Oxford, and Philadelphia (Wharton). As part of his research and advisory activities, he has collaborated with a number of organizations from industries such as consulting (e.g. McKinsey, KPMG), healthcare (e.g. Cambridge University Hospital, English National Health Service), high-tech (e.g. Infineon Technologies) and non-profit services (e.g. Bertelsmann Foundation, GIZ). His research findings were published in top-ranked international journals including the Journal of Applied Psychology, MIS Quarterly, the Journal of Service Research, and the Journal of Product Innovation Management.
