نبذة عن المقرر

This course introduces participants to the ecological and physical characteristics of the Antarctic environment and Antarctic governance. It has a particular focus on current environmental policies in place to protect Antarctica and future policy and governance needs. The exceptional nature of the Antarctic climate and ecosystems will be explored, along with the current state and predictions based on further human-induced climate change. A suite of potential future implications of environmental change for Antarctic governance will also be examined.

Daniela Liggett

Currently involved in research projects focussing on (a) human activities and their impacts in the McMurdo Dry Valleys (Antarctica), (b) Antarctic futures, (c) Antarctic gateway cities, (d) Antarctic geopolitics (in particular decision-making in relation to tourism politics and environmental management), and (e) the complex relationships between users and providers of weather and climate information. The latter project is associated with the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) Polar Prediction Project (PPP).

Adrian McDonald
Adrian McDonald

Professor Adrian McDonald’s research focusses on understanding atmospheric processes relevant to the climate system in Antarctica, the Southern Ocean and New Zealand. He takes fundamental measurements using satellite remote sensing and surface observations, and evaluates climate model output relative to observations.

In the Antarctic Science Platform, Adrian is investigating how atmospheric processes affect the Southern Ocean, Antarctic climate and ice sheet surface mass balance, and how they can be better represented in global climate models.

Andrea Herbert
Andrea Herbert

As an anthropologist with a polar focus, Andrea has an an interest in how humans interact with Antarctica, especially in regard to Antarctic environmental management, governance, and tourism. She works part-time as a tourist guide in the Arctic and Antarctic.
